Understanding 3D Printing: An Interview with Steve Shumaker

We recently sat down for an interview with Steve Shumaker, one of Technical Training Aids’ Education Sales Consultants, to learn more about his experience and insights into the world of 3D printing technology.

A graduate of Missouri Southern State University, Steve has had a diverse career journey. He started in the commercial sector, working in sales in the construction industry, dealing with materials and heavy equipment. In 2009, he moved into education, a field he worked in for nine years, before returning to the commercial sector, this time focusing on signage and advertising. However, he found himself missing education sales and working with educators, leading him to join Technical Training Aids (TTA) in the fall of 2020.

Despite the challenges that 2020 brought, Steve adapted to starting his new role virtually. He has been working diligently to build relationships and collaborate with others in the industry. Steve’s approach aligns seamlessly with that of TTA: since the 1960s, we’ve believed in providing meaningful tools, excellent instructional components, and curricula that truly support educators.

One of Steve’s passions is seeing the expansion of opportunities for students. He strongly believes in the power of hands-on tools to reinforce the education that students receive. After all, “3D printing technology provides just the type of experience that can change their careers!”

Steve’s role at TTA involves being a regional reseller, providing support in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. He enjoys being the local person that schools can turn to for support. His motivation to join TTA was the opportunity to be back in front of educators and help them find solutions that they are passionate about to inspire students.

As Steve eloquently puts it, “I may not be a teacher in the classroom but I love being a part of the process that inspires students. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders!”

Steve has extensive experience with 3D printing technology. He emphasized the growing application of 3D printing in fields such as healthcare, automotive, and aerospace. He loves the fact that you can recreate things and shorten the process of product design and development. He believes in the power of 3D printing to bring ideas to life, whether in a design/engineering class or a history class creating an accurate 3D model of the Sphinx.

Personal Touch and Unique Perspectives

During the interview, Steve shared some personal experiences with CAD software and 3D models. He’s seen, time and time again, that when students have access to engaging tools such as 3D printers and programming sensors, they gain a greater sense of ownership over their education. These tools allow them to visualize concepts, build upon their ideas, and see the direct impact of their work. To hear Steve speak about fostering entrepreneurial spirits, it’s obvious how passionate he is about providing hands-on experiences. After all, interactive learning not only enhances students’ understanding of the material but also deepens their connection to their studies, making learning more meaningful and enjoyable.

In robotics competitions, for example, the goal changes every year. So the students who are competing must learn how to build a specific attachment and program the computer in order to meet a goal. Being able to visualize ideas is a game-changer!

Standing Out in the Market

With the rapid evolution of the 3D printing industry, it’s critical to stand out. During the interview, Steve explained some of the unique value propositions of Technical Training Aids’ 3D printers: this not only involves offering advanced features, such as high print speed and a variety of materials but also means providing effective customer service and relationship-building. Shumaker emphasized that TTA’s 3D printers are designed to meet the specific needs of their clients, from educational institutions to small businesses, which sets them apart from competitors.

Additionally, TTA is committed to offering exceptional customer service, from the point of purchase and beyond. Our dedicated, top-notch technical team is always ready to provide support during or after an installation, swiftly addressing any problems or warranty questions. Our team takes pride and ownership in our ability to alleviate stress for educators; we enjoy partnering with the local schools and with manufacturers to ensure the effective use of purchased technology and tools, and enhance educational efforts.

The TTA commitment to dedication to customer service and satisfaction is evident in Steve’s words, “I want you to succeed. I want you to use the things you purchase.” After all, Steve understands the value of educators’ time, and he aims to take away some of their stress, and ultimately, to support them.

Conclusion: Insights About Education & 3D Printing

In conclusion, our interview with Steve Shumaker offered valuable insights into the world of 3D printing and the role it plays in education today. Steve’s path from the commercial sector to education, and his passion for helping educators and students alike, underscores the importance of hands-on, innovative tools in the learning process. As a regional reseller for TTA, Steve’s extensive experience with 3D printing technology allows him to assist schools in implementing this technology, bringing ideas to life in classrooms across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. He believes in the power of 3D printing to inspire students and spark creativity, whether they’re designing new products or even recreating historical artifacts. We’re grateful for Steve’s time and insights into the realm of 3D printing and the impact it has on education.
