SACA – Smart Automation Certification Alliance
The Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA) offers industry-driven, stackable credentials for Industry 4.0 technologies. Its certification framework supports learners building foundational skills, technicians developing specialized expertise, and professionals working on the design and optimization of connected systems.
Technical Training Aids helps schools, colleges, and employers explore training equipment and learning resources that support their certification goals.
What do SACA certifications assess?
SACA credentials address skills used in automated production environments, from operating equipment to troubleshooting and maintaining interconnected systems.
Associate certifications introduce factory-floor automation technologies and processes. Areas include Basic Operations, Advanced Operations, Robot System Operations, and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Networking and Data Analytics. These credentials are appropriate for high school and college students as well as current workers.
Specialist certifications document technical competencies tied to skilled occupations. They combine focused micro-credentials covering areas such as electrical systems, motor controls, programmable controllers, mechanical systems, robotics, and industrial networking. This modular structure allows learners to build and document expertise in individual skill areas while working toward a broader credential.
Professional certification focuses on the design and optimization of Industry 4.0 systems.
Silver and Gold: knowledge and demonstrated performance
SACA offers two certification levels:
| Level | What candidates must demonstrate |
|---|---|
| Silver | Pass an online written examination validating technical knowledge. |
| Gold | Pass the written examination and complete hands-on performance assessments using SACA-approved equipment. |
Gold certification adds practical evidence of a learner’s ability to apply the knowledge being assessed. For educators and employers, that distinction helps connect classroom preparation with demonstrated technical performance.
Custom Specialist Certifications: align credentials with the job
Every manufacturing facility has its own combination of equipment, processes, and responsibilities. SACA’s Custom Specialist Certifications allow member organizations to build credentials around the competencies required for a specific role.
An employer can identify the skills a position requires and select the corresponding SACA Associate certifications and micro-credentials. Each Custom Specialist Certification must include at least four Associate certifications, micro-credentials, or a combination of both. Members assemble the credential through the SACA portal and can customize its name and add their organization’s logo.
This approach can support onboarding, employee development, and defined advancement pathways. A manufacturer could establish separate credentials for successive maintenance technician roles, with each reflecting the responsibilities and technical expectations of that position.
Colleges and workforce training providers can use the same competency map to plan instruction and lab experiences around an employer’s needs. Training may take place in the workplace or in partnership with an educational institution.
Bringing SACA into your training program
Start with the skills your learners need to develop. Then identify the credentials, instruction, and practical experiences that support those goals.
Schools and employers can become SACA members and pursue authorization to offer certification assessments. Implementation includes preparing qualified instructors or proctors and ensuring that hands-on assessments use equipment approved for the selected credentials.
TTA can help you explore training equipment and learning resources for your program. Amatrol, represented by TTA, offers learning systems that support preparation for SACA credentials, including systems approved for selected hands-on assessments. Equipment selection should match the specific competencies and assessment requirements you plan to address.
